Gronholm wins SSS, Rally Portugal is go!

BP Ford team leader, Marcus Gronholm has taken the early lead on the Rally de Portugal, after he set the pace on the Algarve Stadium super special stage on Thursday evening.

Gronholm completed the 2.03 kilometre speed test in front of more than 20,000 fans in 2 minutes 5.8 seconds, beating Citroen's Sebastien Loeb, whom he was paired with, by 3.3 seconds.

"It was a great stage for the fans to watch," said Gronholm. "The jump was dramatic for some but I was careful not to fly too far and risk damaging the car. Now I plan to have a good nights sleep and then drive hard on the traditional gravel stages in the morning."

Daniel Sordo meanwhile finished the test with the second best time, 2.3 seconds off Gronholm, while Loeb had to settle for joint third with Subaru's Petter Solberg.

Henning Solberg was next up in fifth, while Mikko Hirvonen rounded out the top six, ahead of Chris Atkinson, Daniel Carlsson, Gigi Galli and Toni Gardemeister.

"It was great to compete in front of such a big crowd, said Mikko. I didn't want to take any risks but I hope I put on a good show for the fans. After this fun start, the competition begins for real in the morning."

Of all the works drivers', only one had a big moment, namely Jari-Matti Latvala, who went off at the first corner. The Stobart Ford driver conceded a good 10 seconds as a result.

The opening leg now continues on Friday with two identical loops of three gravel special stages north-east of the rally base in Faro, the heart of the Algarve holiday region. Drivers restart at 09.30 and return at 18.15 after another 120.76km of competition.

3.3 secs back to Petter. One sneeze by Ford or Citroen and Subaru in the lead.
