Jarno Trulli admits the Australian GP highlighted the fact that Toyota still have a lot of work to do before they can challenge near the front of the field.
Although both Toyota drivers, Trulli and team-mate Ralf Schumacher, qualified and finished the Melbourne race in the top ten, the team showed little sign of being able to challenge for a podium finish.
Schumacher, though, did manage to finish in the points for the Cologne-based team, bringing his TF107 home in eighth place. Trulli finished ninth, just outside of the points.
"There is a lot of work to do anyway, because compared to the top teams, we are very far away," Trulli told SpeedTV.
"But nevertheless it's good to start in this way after such a difficult time in winter testing.
"But don't forget that Melbourne is a track where we've always been competitive, so we'll see what happens in the next two races."
The Italian is now hoping that Toyota put the upcoming three-day testing at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia to good use and enter the second race of the season, the Malaysian GP, with an improved package.
"I hope something new comes for the car," he added.
