Ferrari - in the form of Kimi Raikkonen at least - were more than a second quicker than their rivals in the fastest lap charts for the Australian GP.
Raikkonen delivered a devastating demonstration of superiority in Melbourne on Sunday, leading from start to finish and lapping far, far quicker than Fernando Alonso's best effort.
The Finn's fastest lap time of 1:25.235 was more than a second superior to the Spaniard's 1:26.314. Lewis Hamilton's best time, also set on lap twenty, was only fractionally adrift of his team-mate's, suggesting that both drivers wrung the maximum possible pace from the MP4-22.
The BMW of Robert Kubica was fourth-fastest, approximately three-tenths of a second slower than the McLarens, while Nico Rosberg gave rise to hopes of a Williams renaissance by recording the fifth-quickest time.
Other notable times were those of Felipe Massa, whose best was almost two seconds behind his team-mate, and Heikki Kovalainen, whose struggles were encapsulated by his inability to lap within seven-tenths of Giancarlo Fisichella. The Italian himself was only seventh-fastest, behind Nick Heidfeld, in the lacklustre Renault.
The less said about Jenson Button the better.

If BMW can sort our their reliability concerns and exploit the full power of their engine, Ferrari better watch out for the soon to be headline "Pole on Pole". |
