American supercar aims for 273mph
American supercar manufacturer Shelby Super Cars (SSC) is aiming to snatch the production world speed record from the 253mph Bugatti Veyron next week.
Seven years in the making, the companys Ultimate Aero TT certainly sounds like it has the goods. The mid-engined, rear-wheel drive supercar is powered by a 6.3-litre twin-turbocharged and intercooled bespoke V8 boasting 1183bhp and 1094lb/ft of torque.

Worryingly, the speedometer only reads as high as 260mph but at those speeds no-one is likely to have time to check. Stopping is obviously a major concern when your car is capable of clocking up such figures and the Ultimate Aero wears huge 14-inch brake discs grabbed by eight piston callipers up front and six-pistons at the rear. The car will accelerate up to the ton from a standing start and back to rest in just 11.6 seconds.

In order to prove the cars credentials, SSC has engaged MKM Racing to oversee a world production speed record along a closed stretch of highway in Elko County, Nevada, USA. Initial testing along the 12-mile stretch will begin on March 21. The Ultimate Aero is no stripped-down racer however, even though it features a flat undertray and Venturi effect tunnels. The interior is swathed in leather and appointed with air-con, a 10-speaker audio system with DVD player and sat-nav plus a screen for the reversing camera. The Aero also has a front-end lift function which raises the nose four inches to help it clear obstacles.
