High presure Direct Injection
Peugeot HDi (High-pressure Direct Injection) engines are designed around the revolutionary common rail high pressure injection system. They benefit from the very latest precision engineering and technology to offer outstanding refinement.
The common rail has two functions. First, it generates pressure and stores the fuel under high pressure in a central accumulator rail. Second, injecting the fuel into individual electronically controlled fuel injectors (one per cylinder).
In the injection phase, the common rail uses a �pilot injection� system, which injects a small amount of extremely fine diesel fuel into the combustion chamber before the main quantity of fuel is delivered each cycle. With this steady, regulated delivery of the fuel, mechanical vibration and chassis shudder is reduced, meaning less noise. At the same time, the fuel is burned more effectively, thus reducing emissions and improving economy.
High torque
Simply put, torque is a force that tends to rotate or turn things, and is measured in Newton Metres (Nm). In a car, the engine creates torque and uses it to spin the crankshaft, which in turn rotates the driven wheels. It is the �pulling power�, or the force to get the car moving. One of the most important characteristics of Peugeot HDi engines are their high torque output. This is achieved with a long stroke dimension and high compression ratio. For example, in our 4 cylinder, 2.0L HDi diesel engine, the torque of 320Nm is equivalent to a typical Aussie 6 cylinder petrol engine. And with overboost, this can momentarily be boosted to 340Nm. HDi Diesels really are strong work horses.
So what benefits do having high torque have? In city driving, high torque makes driving more relaxed as you have more responsive acceleration and fewer gear changes (especially when overtaking or driving up a hill). Because it is a pulling power, torque is ideally suited for towing or carrying heavy loads.
As an example, if you were to pack the car for a family holiday, you would barely notice you were carrying significant additional weight, whereas in a car with lower torque, you would notice driving becomes more of a strain. |

FAP Particle Filter
Let's be honest, driving is never good for the environment. But a Peugeot HDi engine minimises the damage. In fact, Peugeot HDi Diesels are among the cleanest cars on the planet.
The first major consideration with regard to the environment is smog, soot or smoke. All current Peugeot HDi engines are fitted with our pioneering FAP particle filter technology. Peugeot were the first manufacturer in the world to develop the particle filter, and over 1 million Peugeot HDi Diesels worldwide with FAP have been sold. FAP reduces particle emissions to a quantity that is almost impossible to measure. In fact, tests have shown that the FAP particle filter removes more than 99.9% of the fine particles before they could escape into the environment. FAP makes you feel good about driving.
FAP works by trapping and burning these particles, which combine to form soot. What�s more, the FAP particle filter is self-cleaning, and is virtually maintenance free.
The second factor relates to the emission of CO2 (carbon dioxide). While CO2 does not cause any health issues, as its levels in the environment rise, it is a contributing factor towards global warming.
Carbon dioxide emissions are directly proportional to fuel consumption, and since Peugeot HDi cars use around 1/3 less fuel, they emit around 1/3 less CO2 than an equivalent petrol car.
Peugeot is actively seeking other ways to reduce CO2 emissions, such as the carbon sink it has created in the Amazon Basin.
When all this is combined with the low sulphur fuel that is now available, HDi diesel is even more environmentally friendly.
With Peugeot HDi, diesel has never been so clean. |

Turbo power
Due to their low revving nature, diesel engines were traditionally down on power compared to a similar sized petrol engine. Which is why Peugeot fit turbo chargers to all of our HDi engines. Our V6 HDi even has two of them!
A turbo charger forces air into the combustion chamber, creating more combustion force and therefore, more power. The variable geometry of our turbo chargers adjusts the gas flow cross section at the inlet of the turbine wheel in order to optimise turbine power depending on the speed of the engine. The net effect of the variable geometry turbos are an increase in both low and high speed torque, improved acceleration performance and responsiveness, increased peak torque, improved fuel economy and the elimination of turbo lag.
Peugeot�s turbo technology also includes an intercooler which cools the air coming out of the turbo before it goes into the engine. This assists in creating more power.
The result is that the power output and performance figures of our HDi engines are similar to our equivalent sized petrol engines, albeit with a much higher torque output. So you can expect even better performance from our HDi Diesels than a similar sized petrol engine.
The high torque nature of Peugeot HDi engines in combination with turbo power ensure an exhilarating drive every time.
Fuel economy
While Peugeot HDi engines are generous with power they are mean with fuel. Because they carefully regulate their use of fuel, our HDi diesel engines are supremely efficient. In fact, in a Peugeot 307 HDi you could travel over 1,200km on one 60 litre tank (based on combined cycle for 307 HDi 1.6l manual).
Testaments to our fuel economy are our 3 Guinness World Records for fuel economy.
Our most frugal HDi model is the 307 with the 1.6L HDi engine and a manual transmission, which achieves up to 4.3l / 100km on a highway cycle or 4.9l / 100km combined. On the other end of the scale, our performance car, the 407 Coupe with a V6 twin turbo HDi engine and automatic transmission achieves an amazing 6.5l / 100km for the highway cycle or 8.5l / 100km combined.
And better fuel economy means you will make fewer visits to the service station and save money at the same time! |

High durability & low maintenance
One of the more overlooked benefits of a Peugeot HDi diesel engine is its reliability and durability. This in turn leads to low engine maintenance, another area where HDi can be financially beneficial to you.
First, the nature of a diesel engine is to operate at much lower revs than a petrol engine, both for power and torque. Thus it doesn�t have to work as hard to get the maximum performance.
Second, there are fewer mechanical parts needed. Spark plugs, ignition coil, distributor and plug wires are all elements of petrol engines that aren�t used in diesels. Similarly, the FAP particle filter is virtually maintenance free, with its first service required at only 210,000km.
Finally, a diesel engine has a much lower exhaust temperature (approx. 450�C) than a petrol engine (approx. 1,000�C). This extends the life of the exhaust valves and the turbo charger. |

Biodiesel compatibility
The use of Biodiesel has been examined by Automobiles Peugeot in consultation with expert representatives from Biodiesel producers, refiners and injection equipment manufactures. The Peugeot HDi range of vehicles can successfully operate on Biodiesel which meets or is equivalent to the EN14214 Standard to a maximum blend of B5. Additionally the end-product fuel must comply with the EN590 standard, that allows a maximum of 5% fatty acid methyl ester content.
Biodiesel fuels which do not meet this standard should not be used as it may affect the longevity and performance of the vehicle and will void elements of the manufacturer�s warranty.
