28% hike justified, says Movietowne owner

Are customers willing to pay $45 to see a movie?

MovieTowne owner, Derek Chin, believes so.

One week ago the Invaders Bay-based enterprise raised its movie going price from $35 to $45, a 28 per cent increase.

And for $5 more, a customer can gain access to the cinemas concession stand where prices have also increased between 10-15 per cent.

We had no alternative. Weve been in operation for about four years and weve maintained the price and the MovieTowne standard, while prices around us have continued to skyrocket. We have to pay our employees, shampoo the carpets and seats every night and the cost of security has gone up. Its a constant battle to make it work, he said.

MovieTowne was also re-painted this year.

He explained that while the tickets used to cost $35, MovieTowne had to pay $17.50, half the cost to its distributor.

Chin also observed that electricity costs had increased and in an operation like his, it was acutely felt.

When electricity goes, we have back-up generators which cost $8,000 to use, he said.

Justifying the increase further, he said, that the overall cost of maintaining a premium place like MovieTowne had become difficult.

People have to understand that if you want a five-star operation, you have to pay the price, he said.

But Chin noted that the price would be constant for about the next four to five years.

As for the $5 to get to the concession stand?

Thats $5 I get that the distributors dont get, he said.

He said the noise about the increase was expected, but he expected it to die down soon. He noted that there had been an increase in movie sales of about 20,000 customers in December to 638,000 in 2006 from 616,000 in 2005.

This should bring people to the reality that we have been holding down prices. Everything now costs more money.

If I didnt increase prices, wed be running at a loss. As for the concession stand, we are not immune to increases in the price of chicken, he said.

Meanwhile, Trincity Mall has also increased ticket prices by $2 to $20 with its $12 special on Tuesdays remaining intact. The Trincity increase for six of the seven days of the week is only 11 per cent.

I agree one has a choice. It does add up and these days people are looking for value for their money when spending...

What MovieTown has that is great is the ambience...You go inside and sometimes you wonder am I still in T&T...So its a price one has to pay for these things..

I think anyone in the US can come to Movietowne and be impressed that we have such a good cineplex in T&T. Like Zen, it is international class and would be considered good in any part of the world. As long as the girls understand that the fellas making a harder effort to take them out, it qualifies for bonus wife points Laughing Laughing Laughing

On another note, maybe someone kicked his duck:
