learned ppl..
I know the basics for a "normal car"
but when it comes to an evo what else should the prospective buyer look out for besides walking with a "good " mechanic and doing ah lil reaserch on the car _________________ Handle every situation like a dog...If you can't Eat it or Screw it.

There's no substitute for intimate prior knowledge of the particular Evo.
So research... RESEARCH... RESEARCH!
My car looked okay and was... but there still were a few things that I missed.
Try for an Evo 6 RS2... STRONGEST and cheapest of all, but body parts scarce.
Evo 6 RS's corners better 'at the limit' than Evo VII GSR's IMHO.
(Same opinion as Devi Nath and silvermike, who both have Evo VI GSRs.)
No AYC so RS's stronger with no AYC maintenance worries.
If not go for an Evo VII GSR. More expensive but parts available here and USA.
Check The Ultimate Evo Buyers' Guide... Inspecting the vehicle - page #68.

Also MLR's Buyer FAQs (top of page) & Troubleshooting (bottom of page)...

Pay particular attention to questioning the seller about the car's performance...
Encourage him to talk, even show off... a slip of the lip may give you even more vital info.
Before starting the car, try to engage all the gears, especially first and reverse.
Try it next with the car "cold" when at idle and clutch engaged.
BTW first gear is usually hard to engage when "cold." Last try it when "hot."
It will give you a good idea if gearbox is okay. When "hot" it should work smoothly.
Also listen for any rear AYC noise (1) Humm when driving (2) Noise when turning corners briskly.
Go for a test drive. First let him drive, then with him as a passenger.
Look for stumbling at lower speed... or Fuel or Boost Cut symptoms at higher RPM.
Check for overheating at idle (leave it running for 15 minutes after the test drive.)
Check radiator overflow bottle to see if water was lost during use. It often happens if overfull...
but check from normal mark before test drive. It's an indicator of possible future problems.
Check tyres for equal wear. Check sealing compound in trunk and engine bay.
If cracked... too lumpy... too smooth when compared to other similar areas, it may indicate
older accident repair. BTW check for different shade of paint in engine bay and trunk too.
You pay for a lazer alignment at Laughlin & De Gannes or similar shop.
Brief the technician first. Give him an extra $20. Ask him to check side-to-side wheel set-back.
Now you know if the chassis is straight and the condition of ball-joints, steering-ends
and rear suspension bushings etc. etc.
My $0.02
Please add more suggestions fellas... Thanks. _________________ Walk softly... and carry a BIG stick! |

I think you should also do some of the normal car things. Look under and around the car, you will see any obvious shite that not quite right. For example, it looked like my passenger door got hit, in transportation most likely, and the front right fender as well, but no big deal either.
Check teh condition of all the fluids and reservoirs.
Check the spare tire well.
Drive the car and listen for funny noises (as stated)
switch on all the electrical items ALL, wind up every glass, turn on every light.
Remember though that you are still buying a used car and it will not be perfect, expect a few issues after you buy the car. _________________ Bleh |
