V10 Touareg planely the strongest

How strong is a V10-engined VW Touareg? Strong enough to pull a jumbo is the answer, after VW achieved just that on a Surrey runway.

The V10 diesel Touareg, which makes 309bhp and 553lb ft of torque, was hooked up to a Boeing 747-200 Jumbo weighing 155 tons.

All too easy, reckoned driver Uwe Krieghoff afterwards: 'If anyone could lend us a heavier aircraft, please let us know,' he said.

Volkswagen did little to modify the Touareg before attempting the mammoth pull. The final drive ratio was swapped for one from the Touareg V8 to better overcome the static friction caused by the aircraft's weight on its tyres, and 4.3 tons of metal ballast was added to the car to help it grip. The only other tweak was to pump up the tyres.

The Boeing jet was also slightly modified, swapping 20 tonnes of fuel for water and replacing its jet engines with dummies for safety reasons. Otherwise, the retired plane was exactly as it last flew in 2005.

The Touareg has successfully pulled a Boeing 747-400 in Germany weighing 190 tons.
